How to Find the Best Swimming Pool Pump and Filter

The heart of your pool is its pump and filter system. The pump pulls water from the pool through the skimmer and main drain, pushes it through the filter and returns it to the pool. The filter ensures the pool is clean from contamination brought in by swimmers and the wind. Taking the time to find the correct pump and filter will extend the life of your pool and ultimately save you time and money. Here at ProPools Direct, we've created a guide on how to find the best swimming pool pump and filter for your pool. We hope this guide will help buying pool equipment a little less stressful.

Choosing the Right Type of Filter for Your Pool

There are three main types of pool filters: DE or Diatomaceous Earth, Sand and Cartridge. But which of these will work best for your pool? Unfortunately it's not a one-size-fits-all formula. The one key factor that determines the performance of your pool filter is the size. We recommend selecting a pool filter at least one size bigger than you think you need.

How to Find Out the Right Size?

Follow these steps to determine the best filter size for your pool.

Step 1: Calculate the total volume of your pool. For square/rectangular, the formula is length x width x depth. For circular, it's radios x 3.14 (pi) x depth.

Step 2: Calculate the capacity of your pool in gallons. Do so by multiplying pool volume (step 1) by 7.48 (number of gallons in a cubic foot of volume).

Step 3: Calculate the flow rate of your water. There are hardware sensors you can buy, but we have a formula you can use instead. Flow rate = capacity of the pool divided by turnover rate. Turnover rate is the total time required to circulate the body of water equal to the capacity of the pool.

Step 4: Purchase your ideal filter. One with a flow rate that matches the flow rate of your pool. Please note the actual flow rate of a filter can be derived by multiplying the filter rate by filter area.

Step 5: Reminder to buy one that's at least one size bigger!
